There are many cowboy-type telehealth providers out there doing dangerous things. But what could make telehealth dangerous? There are so many things. Doctors should know these dangers, given that they have likely been trained to be aware of them.
Prescribing over telehealth is dangerous but a minefield when done asynchronously. What is asynchronous care? It’s where you, the patient, fill out a questionnaire, and the doctor doesn’t even call you. See, if a doctor called you, not only could they ask you those same questions, but they could then give you advice as needed based on the answers you give to those questions.
In effect, they could do a better job of caring for you. Yes, some people are confident that all they have is a cold and they are already better, but they need a certificate to state that’s what happened. My Med Cert can provide these. But we don’t leave you hanging on your own without any advice.
This might worsen over the next several years, with expected GP shortages in the range of 1/4 of the workforce disappearing over the next several years.
Yes, it is anticipated that there will be one-quarter fewer GPs working in the next several years than now. That means it’ll be more challenging to get to see a GP in person, and that means possibly more cowboy-like telehealth platforms popping up. Hopefully, the government will crack down on this at some point, but for now, be aware of the dangers of asynchronous care, particularly concerning scant questionnaires that don’t do anything serious to assess your condition!
